What is DBT?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a structured form of psychotherapy designed to help individuals manage intense emotions, improve relationships, and reduce self-destructive behaviors.

Overview of DBT

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a type of talk therapy (psychotherapy). It’s based on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), but it’s adapted for people who experience emotions very intensely.

“Dialectical” means combining opposite ideas. DBT focuses on helping people accept the reality of their lives and their behaviors, as well as helping them learn to change their lives, including their unhelpful behaviors.

Core Principles

DBT emphasizes the balance between acceptance and change and consists of several key components, including:

  1. 1. Mindfulness: Teaching individuals to be present in the moment and observe their thoughts and feelings without judgment.

  2. 2. Emotion Regulation: Helping individuals understand and manage their emotions effectively.

  3. 3. Distress Tolerance: Providing skills to cope with difficult situations without resorting to harmful behaviors.

  4. 4. Interpersonal Effectiveness: Enhancing communication skills and improving relationships with others
